The Comic Seller, Monrovia Ca
A small town, where it is easy for someone who has lived here or frequents the shops to be recognized wandering around. Strange concept. I can go a year without being inside the shop, but upon entering I am greeted warmly. My existence as a person and customer is welcomed, and remembered. They treat everyone with respect and the workers are great resources of information. I have been involved in this shop for relatively nine years. There are multiple locations, not very many but a couple. This is my to-go, small time, but willing to order anything that is not already in stock.
Down to business, the books. Every section of the store, walls shelves in the center of the floor is dedicated to comics. There are bright colors everywhere, and it is easy to get lost and spend a lot of time roaming around, even if it isn’t a huge location. There are things that will excite, causing gleeful child laughter. Not everything is fun and games, there are books that deal with important political context. It is not only about the superhero genre. There is a wide variety, not everything has pictures, and some are just novels on comic literature.
One of my favorite things is flipping through the boxes of floppies. There are about ten cases, filled to the brim of floppies to go through. They are very cheap, and it is a thrill to find goodies hidden away in these cases. They are not the new releases. Those are lining the shelves alongside the wall. It really is a good way to start any comic trip, they have multiple types, and forms or biographies. I’m always surprised by the eclectic array of things they have.
If you are a first timer coming to Monrovia let me suggest the full experience. Friday’s in Monrovia on Myrtle are full the hustle and bustle of a farmers market. This is a great time to get some good eats, and see plenty of booths. The perfect time for a first timer to get an adequate feel of the Comic Seller. You can wander around the street fair, looking at all of the venders and eating delightful food. Get lost in the wandering people, the music floating throughout the air. Look at some comics, and become a part of a smaller town.
